Phoeniciaboos

22 September, 2026

I found the Phoenicia subreddit and boy is it strange. I guess I can summarize it succinctly as "Phoeniciaboos". Like Weeaboos, but for Phoenicia. Actually they share some similarities with "Byzanboos" who stan the Eastern Roman empire. Both seem to share a resentment with the Arabization of the near east, probably stemming from a kernel of Christian nationalism, if I was forced to make a diagnosis.

They want to revive the Phoenician language, probably with the hope that it would eventually supplant Arabic in Lebanon (the modern borders of which essentially encompass the ancient Phoenician homeland). It's very similar, and they themselves make this comparison positively, to the revival of Hebrew in Israel as a component of Zionism. The key difference being that the Phoenician language is so poorly documented and understood compared to Hebrew, which to my understanding was continuously in use in religious contexts. They'd also have to incorporate so many loan words (or maybe they had a word for "graphics card". Who can say!) that it would basically be pointless because most of those loan words would probably come from Arabic anyway.

The Phoeniciaboos seem to be quarantined to weird subreddits and Discord servers where they make anime web-comics of Caananite deities. I'm not putting any money on their movement breaking containment.
